Family homes must meet certain standards in regards to the cleanliness and care of the house and must guarantee to provide a comfortable room for the student during their stay.
In our previous article: “What does Host family Mean”, we talk about this role and how one of the most empathy-oriented functions is to support the newly arrived member during the adaptation to this new lifestyle.
We realize that the emotions may be all over the place the first few weeks; the absence and distance can take a heavy toll on emotions but the intention to include and introduce the new member as part of the family will make him/her feel better.
Another core function of host families is food preparation. While the students may buy some food to treat themselves or enjoy the school cafeteria, it is up to the family to provide a balanced menu at home. The fun part of this activity is that the student can be encouraged to participate in the preparation of fun desserts or family recipes.
If the host home has kids nearing the student’s age, they can be introduced to their circle of friends; this way he/she will meet more people of his/her age.
This work carries great responsibility, but the benefits are also enormous. It fills your heart with joy to be an essential part of an international experience. If you are willing to share your traditions and culture with the world, we invite you to be part of this beautiful connection and become a host family now.
